ANTS

A collaborative work created by composer Andrew Byrne and choreographers Alice Dixon and Deanne Butterworth.

Alice and Deanne responded choreographically to six of Andrew’s compositions titled ANTS — a series of systematic melodies generated by the cellular automaton Langton’s Ant and performed on both conventional and unconventional percussion instruments. The choreographic responses ranged from close musical synchrony — mirroring tempo, rhythm, and spatial qualities — to compositional counterpoints that created layered, parallel perceptual experiences.
